Man alive, do I love this new Year of No Light record, Ausserwelt.

Things you need to know about Year of No Light: they’re French, they’re mostly instrumental metal / drone and their new album sounds like the last ten minutes of world coming to an end in one beautiful crescendoing crash.

so my friend yancy convinced me to come and see Vancouver’s Dan Mangan (and his band) at Mercury Lounge early on Friday (before the Greenhornes free show)..

and let me tell you, I was definitely pleasantly surprised. the show was great, Dan was funny, personable and just put on a great show. the music was powerful, sincere and sometimes complex but what really stood out were the lyrics and his voice.

Somewhere between Horse Feathers and Jose Gonzalez you can find Boise’s Solomon’s Hollow with a pretty clean guitar tone and vocals that sounds a bit like older Turin Brakes.

I am really fucking excited about the new ASS record coming out very soon.. I know it’s a terrible name but his music is just my fucking favorite. andreas söderström is an multi instrumentalist that tours with El Perro Del marr and Taken by Trees and releases albums under the moniker ASS, which I am just guessing here is probably his initials.

Anyway, it’s pretty and usually the perfect music to relax, work or sleep to..
