So last night I got to see Mr. Paul Simon live at BAM’s Opera House. The show was very very packed and was filled with everyone from the lesbian doctors in front of me to the kids with the PLO scarves.

Paul Simon

The show started at about 815p and went to about 1030p..

Here is a set list from what I can remember and who did what song.

American Tune - the Roche Sisters (w/ Paul Simon)
Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard - Paul Simon
Graceland - Grizzly Bear
Mother and Child Reunion - Grizzly Bear
Peace like a River - Amos Lee
Only - Amos Lee
Still Crazy After all these Years - Olu Dara (for those who don’t know it, it’s Nas’ dad)
Slip Slidin’ Away - Olu Dara
50 Ways to leave Your Lover - Olu Dara
America - Josh Grobin
Silent Eyes (maybe) - Josh Grobin (w/ guests)
Bridge over Troubled Water - Josh Grobin (w/ Paul Simon)
Cecilia - The Roches
*i’m missing one song here*
The Boxer- Gillian Welsh
Duncan - Gillian Welsh (MY FAVORITE OF THE NIGHT.)
Sounds of Silence - Gillian Welsh (w/ Paul Simon)
Mrs. Robinson- Paul Simon
Train in the Distance (Negotiations and Love Songs) - Paul Simon
How Can You Live in the Northeast? - Paul Simon

encore
The Only Living Boy in New York - Paul Simon (w/ Roches)
Late in the Evening - Paul Simon

The show was great, I think that the unknown guitarist (who sort of looked like Josh Grobin), Grizzly Bear and Gillian Welsh and of course Paul Simon were the standout performers of the night. The sound sounded amazing and the seats weren’t that bad either.

Below are some Paul Simon covers.

Hot Chip - Graceland (Paul Simon Cover)

Material Issue - The Boxer (Paul Simon cover)

Peter Bjorn and John - Me and Julio Down by the SChoolyard

Jens Lekman - You can Call Me Al (Paul Simon Cover)

Grizzly Bear - Graceland (Paul SImon Cover)

For my 10th installment (i guess it’s a milestone) I give you Silent Majority

Silent Majority was a post harcore band haling from Long Island NY. They were the band that every band that got big off the island wanted to be when they first started out (check out early Glassjaw). They played just melodic hardcore paired up with raspy vocals. When i listen to them i picture packed VFW halls, pile ons, and beards (not sure why). After they broke up they went on to form such bands as Heads Vs. Breaker, Blood Red, and most recently Capital (so fucking good). I wish i got to see this band live, I even missed their two reunion shows a couple of years back which is a bummer but I live vicariously through videos on You Tube. Here are a few jams. Enjoy.

Nautilus- From You Would Love To Know
Party At Rich’s- From You Would Love To Know
Spoken Words- From Life As A Spectator

Here’s a Rapture bside. Old 7 inch. they don’t sound like this at all anymore…

The Rapture - The Chair that Squeaks

OK this song might get me in trouble with those purists out there/..

But I fucking love this Doors track from Morrison Hotel..

The Doors - Peace Frog

I’ll be SOOOO impressed if anyone can tell me what 80’s rap song sampled this….

Hey does anyone remember what commercial used this song? I mean I think it was turtleback zoo or the brooklyn zoo when I was a kid but I don’t know… Anyone?

Simon and Garfunkel - At the Zoo

HERE’S SOME LIVE RADIOHEAD to HOLD YOU OVER TILL I POST MORE MUSIC:

From the BBC live SHOW:

Radiohead - BodySnatchers (Live at BBC Theater)

From the Scotch Mist Recordings:

Radiohead - Videotape (Scotcjh Mist Webcast)

Radiohead - Reckoner (Scotcjh Mist Webcast)

From the KROQ Breakfast:

Radiohead - Go to Sleep (Live at KROQ BFast)

Honestly one of my favorite punk records of all time. This record from these Richmond Va punks, was a really nice example of how punk could be melodic, high energy and anthemic. I fucking loved this band for the first 4 albums and actually the last time I was ever in a ‘pit’ was at their show at Slims in SF in 1996.

Avail Dixie

For fans of any uptempo high energy rock / punk:

Avail - Model (the song about models and their drive to stay beautiful)

Avail - Sidewalk (the catchy punk one!)

Avail - Southbound 95 (the anthemic one!)

a B side from that record:

Avail - Song (Alt Version)

So around for like one record, this features members of the Chromatics and the Blood Brothers and the Gossip, then they became the Soiled Doves, this song was more melodic than the rest of the record. I really like this track.. Now you shall..

the Vogue - Brass and Satin
