GREAT MC’S

So I wanted to do a post about one of my favorite MC’s and also do a nice lil’ bsides (hard to find) post. So below Aesop Rock, a great MC and bsides collector:

Ace Rock

So here are a few harder to find tracks from Mr. Aesop Rock. Aesop Rock has a voice that sounds like Tom Wait’s been gargling hot asphalt (tm Patton Oswalt). His rhymes are complicated, poetic and original. Check them out and then check out the link to buy his new album, I think its his best record since Labor Days.

Aesop Rock – 1000 Deaths from Appleseed Ep (out of print) .

Aesop Rock – Water

Aesop Rock – Hold the Cup from Appleseed Ep (out of print) .

Aesop Rock – Hidden Thank You Track from the Daylight ep.

Aesop Rock – Big Bang from the Float lp.

Part 5 of the Great MC’s Series: the great Sage Francis.

SAGE

Sage Francis, Battle MC, Freestyler, Spoken word artist and so much more. This Rhode Island rapper has been underground and bitter for years. With a straight edge lifestyle and a record deal with Epitaph Records, this is not what you would call your run of the mill musician. He was the MC to beat at Scribble Jam for years. And maybe the only MC I have ever heard reference GG Allin, Tom Waits and Fugazi. ALL SONGS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED~!

Sage Francis – Message Sent from Personal Journals .

Non Prophets – Bounce (Live) from Sick of Waiting Tables… .

Sage Francis – Mullet (Spoken Word) from Still Sick … Urine Trouble .

Sage Francis – Got up This Morning from Human the Death Dance .

The next installment from our Great MC’s posts. MOS DEF!

mosdef

When he’s not starring on Broadway or annoying the shit out of me in Bruce Willis’ movies, Mos Def, one of Brooklyn’s finest MC’s, can really rock the mic. He has been making records for years now and really has established himself in the rap world as an lyricist, a political activist and all around smart fucking dude. Check out the man’s wordplay, vocabulary and insightful rhymes below:

Black Star – Definition from Mos Def and Talib Kweli are… Black Star .

Mos Def – Brooklyn from Black on Both Sides .

Black Star – Little Brother from the Hurricane soundtrack .

Mos Def – Beef from Beef single.

Part 3 in thepunkguy’s Great MC’s, the original Lyricist: Rakim.

rakim

One of the original MCs to take lyrics seriously. Rakim was the originator and definitely the first MC that make me love word play, rhyme scheme and delivery. Well, him and KRS ONE. Oops, that’ll be soon enough… Take a listen to some of Rakim’s best work:

Eric B & Rakim – Microphone Fiend from Follow the Leader .

Eric B & Rakim – Juice (Know The Ledge) from Juice soundtrack .

Eric B & Rakim – Follow the Leader from Follow the Leader .

So I am sure most of you saw this one coming.. Here are a few tracks from one of my favorite MCs, EL P.

EL P

Mr. EL Producto, formerly from Company Flow, self proclaimed “a natural B-boy brainiac who’ll smack you out your mittens”. A dissonant flow over crazy sci fi, self produced beats, this MC is one of the best of the underground rappers. He’s the Ian McKaye of independent hip hop with chops to match. Check out the songs below for proof:

El P – Deep Space 9mm from Fantastic Damage .

El P – The Overly Dramatic Truth (Live) original from I’ll Sleep when You’re Dead .

El P – Everything Must Go (remix) original from I’ll Sleep when You’re Dead .

EL P (Featuring Aesop Rock) – We are still Standin’ Here unreleased .

Company Flow – Definitive from Funcrusher Plus .

El P – Flyentology (Cassettes Wont Listen Remix) original from I’ll Sleep when You’re Dead .

El P – Patriotism from Soundbombing II compilation .

and now for something completely different, here is a track off of the El P produced jazz record.

El P – Intrigue in the House of India from High Water (Mark) .

Just some great songs by the greatest lyricists (in my opinion) in the world! To start off:

DEL

Mr. Del the Funkee Homosapien, cousin to Ice Cube, underground artist and great lyricist. Hailing from the Bay Area and always rhyming ridiculous things, talking about drugs, skating and video games, Del seems to be just this far from being huge.

Either way, he are a few tracks showing how great of MC he really is:

Del the Funkee Homosapien – Press Rewind from Both Side of the Brain .

Del the Funkee Homosapien – Thank Youse from No Need for Alarm .

Del the Funkee Homosapien – Missing Link (featuring Dinosaur Jr.) from Judgement Night soundtrack .

Del the Funkee Homosapien – No Need for Alarm from No Need for Alarm .

Del the Funkee Homosapien – Phoney Phranchise from Both Side of the Brain .

Deltron 3030 – Mastermind from Deltron 3030 .

Del the Funkee Homosapien – Don’t Forget the Bass from Future Development .

Del the Funkee Homosapien & El P – Offspring from Both Side of the Brain .
