GONZ' GOLDEN OLDIES

For my 10th installment (i guess it’s a milestone) I give you Silent Majority

1075476273_l.jpg

Silent Majority was a post harcore band haling from Long Island NY. They were the band that every band that got big off the island wanted to be when they first started out (check out early Glassjaw). They played just melodic hardcore paired up with raspy vocals. When i listen to them i picture packed VFW halls, pile ons, and beards (not sure why). After they broke up they went on to form such bands as Heads Vs. Breaker, Blood Red, and most recently Capital (so fucking good). I wish i got to see this band live, I even missed their two reunion shows a couple of years back which is a bummer but I live vicariously through videos on You Tube. Here are a few jams. Enjoy.

Nautilus- From You Would Love To Know
Party At Rich’s- From You Would Love To Know
Spoken Words- From Life As A Spectator

This week i give you Burn

Burn

This band is up there in the top tier of the Post Hardcore bands from the 90’s. Fronted by Chaka Malik, best know for his work in Orange 9MM, the band also included such greats as Alan Cage (Quicksand), and later Manny Carrero (Glassjaw). The band never “officially” broke up but their state has been dormant for years. When I first heard Burn I was hooked, in fact it was all I listened to for months. If you haven’t heard them yet but dig Quicksand, Into Another, Orange 9MM, and Still Suit you NEED to check these guys out.

Here are a few songs for your enjoyment:

Burn- Shall Be Judged From the S/T ep

Burn- The Bait From Cleanse

Burn- Cleanse From Cleanse

Burn- Last Great Sea From Lost Great Sea

In this installment i give you Braid.

Briad

This band hailing from Chicago was one of the greatest bands to be mixed up in the whole midwestern mid 90’s Emo scene. Their has been and inspiration to me over the years. Every song they wrote was crafted perfectly. With the guitar lines and vocals of both Bob Nanna and Chris Broach, as well as the amazing drumming of Damon Atkinson and Roy Ewing (in the early days), every album they put out was better than the last. If you don’t know Braid you are missing out on one of the greatest bands ever (in my opinion). Here are a few tunes for you.

Braid-Do You Love Coffee? from Movie Music Volume 2
Braid-Killing A Camera from Frame and Canvas
Braid-A Dozen Roses from Frame and Canvas
Braid-Divers.mp3 from Age Of Octeen
Braid-Grace Car, Part 1 from Age Of Octeen
Braid-Please Drive Faster from Movie Music Volume 1
Braid-Capricorn from Lucky To Be Alive

This week I give you Fifteen

fifteen.jpg

Fifteen was a band from the Bay Area of California fronted by Jeff Ott who is also well known for his time in the band Crimpshrine. Fifteen played political punk rock with messages of drug addiction, homelessness, environmental, and many other hot topics of the time as well as now. Most of the songs were a vehicle to tell stories of Jeff Ott’s past and his battles he fought with addiction and the streets. Their sound is one that is dirty punk rock but with a genuine voice and message. Even though I am not a very poltical person/care about the enviroment, something about this band always caught me. With that being said, here are a few songs that I love.

Fifteen- Liberation II

Fifteen- Greed

Fifteen- Grow Up

Fifteen- Vanessa

This week I give you Christie Front Drive

cfd03.jpg

Christie Front Drive is one of the most underrated early “emo” bands (in my eyes). They were around from 1993-1997, which to me is the golden age of emotional music. Only having one proper full length as well as a hand full of ep’s and splits, they managed to make their mark on the history of post hardcore and emo music in the mid 90’s. They toured the country many times, most notably with Jimmy Eat World, whom they also released a split 7″ with. This band proves that at one point in time you did not need tip top production to have a solid album. The music is pure raw emotion. So are a few songs from Anthology (collection full length), Stereo, and the Boy’s Life split.

November - From Stereo

Dyed On 8 - From Anthorogy

Instant Romance -From Boy’s Life Split

This week i give you Small Brown Bike.

Hailing from Marshall Michigan, These guys were around from 1996-2004. They have released a number of albums through Gainsville Florida’s No Idea Records as well as many eps and splits on various others. This band can be said to have the perfect balence of the “Gainsville” sound with the mid 90’s “Chicago” sound. Each of their songs have pure raw emotion behind eveynote sang and played. Members of Small Brown Bike have gone on to form La Salle and The Great Sea Serpents. So here are a few tracks from Small Brown Bike. Enjoy!

(Familiar) To You- From Nail Yourself To The Ground

Day An Nightmares- From The River Bed

See You In Hell- From Dead Reckoning

Like A Future With No Friend- From Dead Reckoning

This Week I give You Quicksand

quicksand

This band is one of my all time favorite bands. They played the most intense rock music that was like a breath of fresh air compared to the horrible Seattle grunge scene that was insanely popular at this time. The bands line up was a line up of New York Hardcore all stars Walter Schreifels, Tom Capone, Alan Cage, and Sergio Vega. The band was around from 1990-1995 then they had a brief reunion in 1997-1998 and did a tour with the Deftones and like all great bands broke up again. This band alone pioneered the “Post Hardcore” sound that so many bands have drawn influence from (I know I have tried to rip them off many times). Even though there is only two properly released full lengths and a few b-sides this band cannot be properly covered in one post so I’m going to break it up into two. So for round 1 I give you 2 songs from in my eyes their best album Slip, and one track from their unreleased LP that they recorded in 1997-1998 before the called it quits again. Enjoy.

Quicksand: So Down On -From Unreleased LP

Quicksand: Freezing Process -From Slip

Quicksand: Can Opener - From Slip

This week i give you Cap’N Jazz.

capn.jpg

This short lived highly influential band was around in the early 90’s. The band was fronted by indie legend Tim Kinsella. While they only released one full length they have had several 7 inches and compilations. In 1998 Jade Tree Records put out Analphabetapolothology. This was a complete discography. The played amazing emotional music with screechy vocals. The guitar work on everyone of their songs was incredible and way beyond their time. Members of this band went on to form such agreat bands as Make Believe, The Promise Ring, American Football, Owls, Ghosts and Vodka, Joan of Arc and Owen. With this being said i give you a few songs featured on Analphabetapolothology.

Cap’n Jazz - Precious

Cap’n Jazz - Little League

Cap’n Jazz - Puddle Splashers

So this week I give you Face To Face.
face to face

This band drew heavy influence from the likes of Social Distortion with a touch of the so cal punk styling of the  Epitaph Records sound that was popular around their inception. The man behind the band is Trever Keith. He was the only remaining original member when they broke up in 2003. With nearly two dozen releases to date this band has been highly influential but at the same time over looked as just another 90’s punk band. They are also one of the few bands where their live album is one of their best. With that being said i give you a few songs off the album Face To Face- Live. This was recorded on Los Angeles Sep. 1997.

Face To Face-01 Walk the Walk.mp3

Face To Face- 03 Blind.mp3

Face To Face-  08 Ordinary.mp3

Face To Face- 09 Im Trying.mp3

Hey this is Gonz from Get Over Your Self, and this is my new weekly contribution to this wonderful site. I’m extremely pumped that I was asked to be a contributor. Basically the idea behind this is to showcase some bands from the times passed that maybe you forgot about, slept on, or never been exposed to. With that being said this week I give you Jawbreaker.

Jawbreaker

I was first exposed to this band from a radio show that was called “Breakfast at Denny’s”. This was around 1996-7. If this radio show was still around I would sell my Ipod, buy blank tapes and a Walkman. This show was like the mixtape for my life every week. But enough about that, Jawbreaker was a Punk Rock band from San Francisco California. They were around from 1988 to about 1996. They played just played straight up Punk with raw vocals. Blake Schwarzenbach was the voice and the mastermind behind what jawbreaker was. With over fourteen releases to date Jawbreaker is cited as one of the most influential bands of our time. So with that being said I leave you with three songs from my favorite album 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.

Jawbreaker-Do You Still Hate Me?

Jawbreaker-Boxcar

Jawbreaker- The Boat Dreams From the Hill
