I had no idea I Want Candy was a cover. My entire world view has changed…..
Try the original “Piece of My Heart” by Erma Franklin (Aretha’s older sister), instead of the one recorded by Janice Joplin only a year after.

Actually, Erma Franklin’s original beats Janis by a country mile [IMHO], good though her version is. Familiarity is no measure of quality.

Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Long, long, long - George Harrison
Rappaport’s Testament: I Never Gave Up - Chumbawumba
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

I agree with derek - Erma’s version does beat Janis’s by more than a country mile - a city mile even….

I really like the bleak, raspy Bob Dylan version of Mr Tambourine man, and the smarmy Byrds version never fails to turn my stomach. Of course that one the cover actually was released before the original, wonder if it would have been overlooked otherwise.
