December 2007

For anyone worried about tomorrow morning, below I have the most perfectly titled song ever below:

You and I - No guilt on New Year’s morning .

Have a guilt free New Years.

So below are some links, if you happen to be around today. I hope you have a great new years.

a. For some reason, only Moses himself might know, my website popped up second when you did a google image search for Josh Harnett. So I’d like to personally like to thank Josh Harnett for the traffic, and if you are looking for a website that is the most comprehensive Josh Harnett fan club, you have come to the right place.

Josh Harnett (Josh Harnett thanks you!)

b. Also, that makes me think, maybe in the new year I will call every picture I do something like, “Alyssa Milano’s Left Tit” or something similar. I’ll be the worst / best celebrity site ever!!

c. Check out every blog ever who has ever done a best of list. HERE. It’s sort of staggering. In the same way, that I think of the dinosaurs being alive (according to non Christians) for hundreds of millions of years ago. Suddenly, what I am doing doesn’t seem so important. Josh Harnett, why have you forsaken me.

d. Josh Harnett.

e. Looking to track someone down? (in a non stalker kind of way?) HERE.

f. if you missed them, check out the BEST OF 2007 HERE and My trip to Argentina HERE.

g. 19 new year’s photo resolutions for the new year HERE. maybe ill do one and then abandon it the second week.

h. Josh Harnetts Penis (this picture is labeled ‘Josh Harnett’s penis’)

Like every other music site from here to Tucson Arizona, I will attempt, feebly at best, to keep you interested with my best of the best list..

TOP Records of the Year:

18. Soft Circle - Full Bloom : Somewhere between African dance and electronica, member(s?) of Black Dice make up this weirdly rhythmic music. It’s one that grows on you.

Soft Circle - Stones and Trees

17. Shellac - Excellent Italian Greyhound .

16. Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass ; Aesop ups and moves to my old home San Francisco and he makes his best album since Labor Days. Some of the real stand out tracks on this record are: None Shall Pass, Coffee and Getaway Car. Really liked this record.

15. Vampire Weekend - s/t .

14. Kanye West - Graduation (oops) ; His blackest album to date. I love this B side of him sampling Thom Yorke.

Kanye West - Us Placers (feat Lupe and Pharrell) .

13. 31knots - The Days And Nights Of Everything Anywhere . This is one of those bands that I try to convince every one of my “90’s midwestern emo” buddies that they would fucking love. This is exactly what at the drive in might sound like if they weren’t half hispanic and didn’t become the mars volta. I love this fucking band.

31knots - Man Becomes Me .

12. O’Death - Head Home . Another entry in the best of 2007 that doesn’t sound like anything else on here. Southern friend punk rock with bangos, oil cans and fiddles, this band from Brooklyn puts on pretty amazing live show. With barely a tshirt between the whole band, this sweaty bluegrass meets the energy of punk band put out a great lofi record. I am really looking forward to their next release.

11. Pelican - City of Echoes: Once again, my favorite instru-metal band makes a dynamic new record. This time, with acoustic meets long drawn out epic songs, City of Echoes, is really a different kind of metal album for me. This is the kind of metal album I want to listen to while I work, people watch or while I sleep. (yes, sleep.) It’s a great record.

10. Elliott Smith - New Moon . A compilation from one of my favorite artists of all time. I really love some of these tracks and the acoustic versions of the two Heatmiser songs are like a gift from god to me. The only reason this isn’t higher on my list is that cause of my friend Kevin, I have heard 80 percent of the tracks before.

Heatmiser - Not Half Right .

9. A Place to Bury Strangers - s/t: A great 80’s inspired record, think early New Order, Joy Division, etc, recorded in what must have been someone’s ass. Really catchy dark songs, if you can get past the awful production.

A Place to Bury Strangers - I Know Ill See You .

8. Radiohead - In Rainbows . something something, best band, something, self released. check it out.

Radiohead - Videotape (Live Demo)

7. LCD - Sound of Silver: LCD Soundsystem - All of my Friends (Live on WXPN) .

6. Battles - Mirrored; This band for some reason seems to polarize people. To me this band seems to be a real musician’s band. With that being said, I don’t have a fucking decimeter of musical talent, however, I like Rush and Don Caballero, so I am able to fake it. Battles is the best of both worlds for me; an intricate complicated band with a bit of soul and danceability to them.

5. Jose Gonzalez - In Our Nature: Jose Gonzalez - Teardrop (Live) .

4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible: So what can be said about this album that hasn’t already been said over and over? Ill say this that it took me a bit to really get into this record and the more I listen to it the more I like it. I think THIS clip, believe it or not, made me totally reevaluate this record. A friend thinks this record sounds like an old Bruce Springsteen record. I think she meant it as a compliment.

the Arcade Fire - keep the car running (Live on SNL)

3. Menomena - Friend and Foe: I must be into the eclectic this year cause Menomena is not really like any other release on the top of thepunkguy. 3 singers, all playing at least two instruments (not at once.) As you know I have been a proponent of this band forever and when this record came out I was more than excited and I am so glad that it exceeded my expectations. And this band finally got the attention it’s due. Anyway, Friend and Foe has horns, some guitars and a tons of great melodies.

Menomena - Wet and Rusting (live from the take away show) .

2. Beirut - the Flying Cup Club: Last year’s number 1, this year’s at a comfortable number 2. The Flying Cup Club is like a 20 year old moves to Paris, engulfs himself in French music, plays tons of horns and then recruits the dude from Final Fantasy to make a record that doesn’t sound like anything else released all year. Wait, that is exactly what it is. It’s different, in a good way.

Beirut - Nantes (live on KEXP) .

1. EL P - I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead: Living in New York City means finding the perfect soundtrack to walking around the city. Never in all of my almost ten years living here have I ever found a cd that felt so comfortable walking around the city. It’s intricate, it’s hip hop, it complicated and it’s hard as fuck. I mean this record has everything for me. I really do love it and it makes New York fit just right.

EL P - Tasmanian Pain Coaster .

———————————————-

Some runner ups: Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance, Wilco - Sky Blue Sky, Two Gallants - Two Gallants, Ted Leo - Living with the Living, Spoon - Ga ga ga ga ga, Rocky Volotato - Brag and the Cuss, The National - Boxer (sorry James and Dan) and Iron and Wine - the Shepherd’s Dog

1. Beirut - Secret Show at Coco 66, Greenpoint Brooklyn (09.19.07). A great place to see a small intimate show of a 8 person band. Had the best time, was right up there. Probably didn’t hurt that I was drunk and singing along like I was at an Irish Futbol game. SEE REVIEW AND MORE PICTS HERE.

Is Finale, Spanish? I mean I know it’s Italian but do they use it here? Anyone? ?

Anyway, it’s Christmas here in Argentina and it’ll be the last day that I write or post anything more about the trip. (besides the picts that follows this post.)
Had a great time. I was quickly reminded that I sweat a bit in 90 degree weather and that I don’t speak a drop of Spanish. Below are some astute and not so astute things I have come to realize about Buenos Aires, Argentina:

a. There are an unusual amount of Ford Falcons between the years of 61 and 73 around the city. I know there must be a story behind this, I am just too lazy to find it out.

ford falcon “I’m everywhere!”

(also you can drive with your headlights off at night here. safety first!)

b. You know what is in style here in Buenos Aires? Cleavage. I mean, from Grandmas to young teens. I’m just saying!

c. I am guessing that there are more Pizzerias here in Argentina then in Rome and New York combined. I mean shit, I couldn’t find a vegetable to save my life but I could buy three different pies from three different places on this block alone.

d. They shoot off fireworks at midnight on Christmas Eve. I am not sure why. Once again, I could probably find out, if I wasn’t so lazy. But I am 100 percent sure that it has to do with Santa and Jesus loving explosions so much.

e. Not that many tattooed people here in Argentina. Well a lot of people have tattoos just no sleeves or anything like that.

This is weird but in the middle of the shopping area, (imagine Union Square or 5th ave somewhere), there was this mall, a punk rock mall. I swear. Like it was three floors of graffitied walls, “hot topic” stores, vintage shops and small tattoo parlors that had one tattoo chair and all the hepatitis you can shake a stick at.

Also, another thing is, that you know how a lot of women in the states have that above the butt crack tattoo? Well here they have the same thing but it’s located on their upper arm. Like on the front of their shoulder. I don’t know why. Anyone??

f. Also if you remember, I have this obsession with other countries’ energy drinks, like when I was in Japan and they had 40 dollar energy drinks that were made by a pharmaceutical company? Anyway, here they have one called SPEED. (see corresponding picture below) Anyway I finally got around to buying one, it tasted a lil bit like apple juice meets maker’s mark. It didn’t do anything at first but then after a few seconds I had a weird numbing sensation in my throat, my head started to shake and I couldn’t see anything past three inches from face. Let’s just say, I recommend it.

speed does a body good (I’m not called Speed cause I like Keanu)

g. Stay away from the cats here. They might look harmless but they mean business.

Killer Kat (I don’t believe a thing this cat says!)

h. A quick tutorial on how to be an “Ugly American” or Why other countries think we suck… So on the last day of the trip, I ate at place called “Mark’s Cafe” that was recommended in TIME OUT Argentina (my first mistake.)

Most of the patrons inside spoke little to no Spanish and the workers seemed really sweet and helpful. However, that doesn’t mean that the service still wasn’t completely slow and weird. After I ordered my pollo sandwich with blah blah.. 15 minutes past and the waitress came back over to tell me they were out of chicken. Why did they only figure that out 15 minutes after I ordered it? I mean really, did you just put the order in and sit around? Or were you not told that your menu, where 1/3 of the choices contained chicken, was now non applicable?? Either way, I took it like a man and said, in bad awful Spanish, Ill take the jamon crusto. etc…

However, these three fucking nimrods come into the place that fucking made me want to shoot myself. They all had on hats that said, I shit you not, TEAM USA! Then after speaking louder than anyone in the whole place, the older lady went up to one of these young waitresses and just started asking for all this shit that wasn’t on the menu. Not even respecting the fact that she didn’t speak great English or that we weren’t in a fuckin’ TGIFs.

“Do you have … like string beans? How about a chicken salad? Does that come with cheese? Well I can’t read that menu it’s not in English…”

Holy fucking Christ. Please people, the only thing I ask is that when you go other countries, just be respectful. C’mon, how hard is that? Say Gracias instead of thank you. please.

Breathe…..

i. I’ll say it one more time, the food here is incredibly good and cheap. I know I’m repeating myself but if you were to come down here for one thing, besides Summer in the Wintertime, come for the food. However, let it be known they do Italian better than any other place I have ever been to (next to maybe NYC and Italy.)

Overall I had a lovely time here in Argentina and would recommend anyone to come and visit if you want to vacation somewhere pretty cheap and don’t mind non ironic mullets.

I must say I find myself pining to come home just a lil bit, but as soon as I feel that 20 degree weather, I’ll wish for a shoulder tattoo and a Ford Falcon.

See you next year!

So let’s just say this, Buenos Aires is not the city for you to go to if you love animals. There are wild cats everywhere, people eat tons of meat and there is leather everywhere. As I write this I am sitting on one of those butterfly chairs made of COW HIDE while my feet are up on a table that sits on a rug, also made of cow hide.

With that being said, before I came here, I was under the impression that they were giving away Philly cheese steaks and leather belts at the airport as a welcome Lei. This is not a complete lie but this is not completely the truth. They are quite fond of leather and beef here. Definitely more than any other place I have ever been to. And I have spent some time in Texas.

When doing my research, I do what any person would do. I watched tons of Travel channel. Particularly, that show Passport to Latin America starring Samantha Brown, the cute but not overtly sexy host.

When she went to Buenos Aires, she went to a leather shop called Uru, where she picked out a coat, the size and the color and got one made in 6 hours. So with hopes that I was going to get a full leather outfit, including leather pants, chaps, socks and glasses, I headed to Uru to find what I needed in leather goods.

Sam Brown (Samantha Brown minus the leather coat)

Let me say, I support PETA and believe that no animal should be treated cruelly. However, when in Argentina, act as an Argentinian, which means eating as much meat as they can throw at you and getting a custom leather coat.

So I go in, try on a few different “styles” of leather coats and find one that I like (the “Fidel”, I wonder if I am getting a Castro inspired coat). They fit me, which more or less means they measure me and realize I have short arms, I could have told them that. Then I pick colors. I wanted to go for something like Brad Pitt wore in Fight Club (um..) or something that didn’t make me look like I was cruising the Surf Club in NJ. It came down to two colors, a regular old black leather or a really light green color. I decided to go with the green.

She then looks at me and flippantly tells me that it’s made from baby goat. What? Huh?

I had no idea that walking into a leather shop, just like the one that lil ole innocent Samantha Brown did, would I be promoting the slaughtering of a baby goats. Nor did I think that they even made anything out of dead baby goats besides vests for angels.

So let’s just say, if you see me wearing a greenish light leather coat, don’t judge me, I was just following Samantha Brown’s lead … and look how sweet she is…

Sam Brown

(PS No animals were harmed during the writing of this post)

(PPS I saw Evita’s grave. Pretty anticlimactic. However, the rest of the cemetery was fucking so cool!)
