Hi all! My name is Mike and Krist has been kind enough to let me aboard, adding what I can to the blog and sharing some bits. I figured the best way to start is by sharing my favorite punk band from the NYC area.
They’re called Gloryhole, and I don’t know much about them other than their songs are great. I know they started with some kids from Westchester County NY and that one or more of the members attended NYU. The mutual friend that introduced me to their music said that although they attend NYU, they still intend to be punk.
They don’t have anything officially released, to my knowledge. So here’s a link to their page where you can download four of their songs: LINK
Start with “Scared of Heights,†a song I would consider a superhit. This is incredibly fun, incredibly catchy punk music. The other songs are great too. Post up and let me know what you think, but I consider homemade gems like this to be an unfortunately rare real treat.
Other less talented bands would take Gloryhole’s mention of being scared of jungle gym as a kid, and use it as a heavyhanded attempt to be literate. However, Gloryhole says it and moves on with such a great song that it probably doesn’t faze you until the song has ended. The casualness is something a lot of new bands don’t have, and it’s what makes these songs so great.

The next installment from our Great MC’s posts. MOS DEF!

When he’s not starring on Broadway or annoying the shit out of me in Bruce Willis’ movies, Mos Def, one of Brooklyn’s finest MC’s, can really rock the mic. He has been making records for years now and really has established himself in the rap world as an lyricist, a political activist and all around smart fucking dude. Check out the man’s wordplay, vocabulary and insightful rhymes below:
Black Star – Definition from Mos Def and Talib Kweli are… Black Star .
Mos Def – Brooklyn from Black on Both Sides .
Black Star – Little Brother from the Hurricane soundtrack .
Mos Def – Beef from Beef single.

THIS CLOSE, an ongoing series of posts about bands that were THIS CLOSE to being huge.
(photo cred.)
This week, we feature the Promise Ring, a band from Wisconsin that, in my opinion, could have been as big as the Shins or even bigger had they released their records a few years later. A great post punk band with a lot of pop parts and great melodies. Check out some of the fun lyrics and unusually poppy songs from the Promise Ring below:
The Promise Ring – Why did we Ever Meet ? from Nothing Feels Good .
The Promise Ring – The Deep South from Very Emergency .
The Promise Ring – The Best Looking Boys from Boys and Girls .
