THIS CLOSE, an ongoing series of posts about bands that were THIS CLOSE to being huge.
(photo cred.)
This week, we feature the Promise Ring, a band from Wisconsin that, in my opinion, could have been as big as the Shins or even bigger had they released their records a few years later. A great post punk band with a lot of pop parts and great melodies. Check out some of the fun lyrics and unusually poppy songs from the Promise Ring below:
The Promise Ring – Why did we Ever Meet ? from Nothing Feels Good .
The Promise Ring – The Deep South from Very Emergency .
The Promise Ring – The Best Looking Boys from Boys and Girls .
the Promise Ring – B is for Betlhehem from Nothing Feels Good .
The Promise Ring – A Picture Postcard from Falsetto Keeps Time 7inch.
the Promise Ring – Everywhere in Denver from 30 degrees Everywhere .

Along with Texas Is The Reason, one of my favorite bands of all time. They always make me so happy when I listen to them. I imagine their lyrics impacted me the way Morrissey’s impacted people 10 years earlier. Except their songs were about Cherry Coke, American cities and girls named Jane who wear sweaters, not abstinence, abusive boarding schools and repressed homosexuality. But otherwise, very much the same impact.

BIG UPS TO THE PROMISE RING. Have their been any movies with music by them? It seems like their songs would be ripe for film.

You must have their cover of “Gouge Away” right? I have a live recording of A picture postcard but it cuts off right at the good part. I think they had a few outtakes from Wood/Water that are out there somewhere. Also they had a song “easy” on a Jade Tree comp. Anyone else have better things? Any live stuff?
