July 2007

Hey this is Gonz from Get Over Your Self, and this is my new weekly contribution to this wonderful site. I’m extremely pumped that I was asked to be a contributor. Basically the idea behind this is to showcase some bands from the times passed that maybe you forgot about, slept on, or never been exposed to. With that being said this week I give you Jawbreaker.

Jawbreaker

I was first exposed to this band from a radio show that was called “Breakfast at Denny’s”. This was around 1996-7. If this radio show was still around I would sell my Ipod, buy blank tapes and a Walkman. This show was like the mixtape for my life every week. But enough about that, Jawbreaker was a Punk Rock band from San Francisco California. They were around from 1988 to about 1996. They played just played straight up Punk with raw vocals. Blake Schwarzenbach was the voice and the mastermind behind what jawbreaker was. With over fourteen releases to date Jawbreaker is cited as one of the most influential bands of our time. So with that being said I leave you with three songs from my favorite album 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.

Jawbreaker-Do You Still Hate Me?

Jawbreaker-Boxcar

Jawbreaker- The Boat Dreams From the Hill

The lead singer of Fall out Boy was doing karaoke. No Joke. He did like three songs. And there were about ten people surrounding him photographing him and taping it. And I thought to myself… this is a moment I am going to hear about for at least a day or two all the internet. Wait, I just helped perpetuate it. SHIT!

So after TV on the Radio last night, me, the two Dan’s and Davey went to eat at Bliss in W’Burg. We ended up talking about hysterical songs and GG Allin. (trust me, they are related, I mean have you heard Bite it, You Scum?) Anyway, none of them had ever heard Atom and His Package, so I told them I would post at least one song for them today. Here it is..

pelican So I went to see Urge’s night of metal at Bowery with Preistbird, Earth and Pelican on Tuesday. And did it fuckin’ rock. The night started out with Priestbird (ex Tarantula AD). They were mostly instrumental with a killer drummer and cellist. Really great. Check out some pictures at the Fader HERE and check out the doubleneck bass / guitar combo..

Pictures below.

Next up was Earth. I wasn’t particularly fond of their sludge-y slow moving metal and returned quickly down to the bar. I am sure they were ok, I just really wasn’t into the pacing of the music.

Finally, Pelican came on. Holy Shit. They were even better than the last time I saw them with Mono at Avalon about a year ago.  If you dont’ know already, Pelican is an instrumental metal band from Chicago that seriously kicks ass. Check out some pictures below. Not my best pictures, thanks to alcohol but a few good ones in there….

(all picts by me.) (how strange is that last one?? He’s like a metal unicorn.)

Anyway, the show was great.  Here’s a Pelican track for those who don’t know what they sound like.  Thanks to Katy for the show!  You’re the best!

So while walking around yesterday after work, this Clem Snide song comes on my jukebox that I love. ANd I notice that there’s no real music it in. Just him singing a cappella so it made me wonder what other tracks I like that have little to no music at all. So below are a few I found. Enjoy..

Clem Snide - the Curse of Great Beauty

Elliott Smith - I didn’t Understand

Kind of Like Spitting - B Side Poetry

the Zombies - the Way I feel Inside

Sage Frances - Slow Down Gandhi (a cappella)

Elliott Smith - Because (Beatles Cover)

what other good ones are there??
