Not a doubt in my mind. The raw viciousness of garage definitely carried over to, and in essence invented, punk rock.
The Sonics, along with The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, and MC5 were responsible for the beginnings of punk.

There’s a lot of debate on this – who invented the sound and style? I’d say the Sonics are more prototype – just like a band like Television.
Then, whodunnit? Who were the first? Let’s take the year 1975. With Punk rock, there were the Ramones on one side of the pond, and the McLaren clan on both sides: the New York Dolls (more hard rock)/Johnny thunders and the heartbreakers (same guitarist, more punk rock)/the sex pistols (first rehearsals that year).
But there’s more than punksy rock. There’s the artsy warsy noisy vaguey type of racket, which few people would call ‘rock’. Who were the first then?
One can still play any record of Mars, two girls + two boys from New York, on any current new wave dance night, and nobody would look up. Or think it’s from ’75-’78. Sometimes dubbed ‘the first of the no wave bands’ – they found music in the noise.
Then, in London, there was the very artsy Genesis P Orridge and his Throbbing gristle. Good for some squeaky noises, self mutilation, nasty performance art. Had an interesting show called prostitution in the ICA Londen in ’76.
Though both acts started in 1975. Little discussion about the cities involved: NYC and London!

In the first place the Sex Pistols absolutely did not start the legand of punk rock! Niether did the who or the sonics and for another point I’m happy to prove Mc5 is ROCK!
Not punk theres about a 30 year gap there retard. O.K. to understand punk rock and its origin you have to realize that its just a stripped down version of garage rock its played faster it has more simple beats and it was mostly played on a broken guitar with three strings. Punk isn’t just a style of music, its an entire lifestyle. Now the Ramones went on tuor in ’76, there in England, the future memberes of the Clash and the sex pistols watched in awe, and pleaded to meet the “legendary” band. Then nevermind the bollocks was realeased in ’77, after the Ramones had alrady been on tour. So suck on my nuts, along with the Ramones, who I believe everyone who reads this should find a way to contact at least one member of that band and thank them for the revolution that this webpage is so proudly wrong about! honestly. adam. if you really look at it , you are completely contradicting yourself, first you say that the sonics are garage rock and the MC5 are rock and then you say that punk is a lifestyle and not a style of music but then you say that the Ramones started it all.
the truth of it is that punk didn’t start at a genre of music. it was an art movement labeled by mainstream media years after the actual scene was gone or changed. if you had asked the ramones, the mc5, the stooges or the dictators or the dead boys, television or suicide (all very different styles), if the music they were playing was punk , they would have all said NO.
the point and idea of this website is to note some ideals that were believed in that art movement during those unlabeled years,and apply them to current art, music, sex and anything else that might fit into a genre that people will have trouble labeling until some media figure finds a ‘term’ that seems reasonable to them.
